Darby Family Leap Castle Ireland 1660s-1860s Rare Original Historical Papers & Documents Lot All items are in Antique Condition with years ranging from 1662 to 1863. Included: 1. Handwritten Letter Signed by "St. Vincent" and addressed to "Dear Lady Hamilton." It is undated. St. Vincent was John Jervis, the 1st Earl of St. Vincent (1735-1823). Measures approximately 4 3/8" x 5 7/8". 1 Page. 2. Handwritten Letter Signed by "St. Vincent" and addressed to "My Dear Lady Hamilton." It appears to be dated "1 January 1799." Letter mentions Captain Darby of the HMS Bellerophon and the "Nile." Part of Darby's name is chipped on the right side of the letter. Measures approximately 4 3/8" x 5 7/8". 1 Page. 3. Envelope with writing on the outside, which mentions "Letter written to Darby dated Feb 27, 1799." It also mentions Gibraltar, the Bellerophon and St. Vincent. Measures approximately 3 5/8" x 5 3/4". Envelope is empty. 4. Folded Papers with "Copy Hollands Patent" and "1717" written on the outside. These papers have a heavy fold with extensive tearing along the folds. All pages have tearing. The fold is completely uneven. Folded, the item measures around 4 3/4" x 6 1/2". When the fold is straightened out, it is around 4" x 11 7/8". It is difficult to open these papers due to the fold and tearing. Papers are extremely fragile. There appears to be three pages The papers do mention "John Holland," "Ahancon," "Leap," and discusses land and likely property, I'm not sure. When carefully opening it up, it seems to measure 11 3/4" x 11 3/4" (give or take). I noticed that the top section of these papers was missing but found a loose segment which appears to be part of this missing area. It measures around 3 7/8" x 8 7/8". 5. Notebook with heavy darkening to the outside pages, possibly fire damage. Measures approximately 5 1/8" x 8 1/2". Around 60 Pages. This antique book is fragile with extensive tearing, chipping and wear. Pages have handwritten text which seem to be related to the Royal Navy. There are mentions of Pendants, various colors, flags, and words like "fleet" and "ships." No date or an indication on who wrote this information. This may have been written by a student learning about naval customs and meanings. I don't have any other information. Notebook has heavy wear and needs to be handled with care for preservation. 6. There are four segments of torn paper with family history written on them. Names include Christopher, Lawrence, Robert, Edward, and more. These were all part of the same document at one time. Segments measure around 6 1/4" x 6 1/2" (give or take). On the outside of the paper it reads, "Lovett Pedigree." The Lovetts and the Darbys were connected through marriage. 7. Undated Letter appearing to be addressed to "Honored Sir." Letter may be signed by Jonathan Darby, I'm not sure. Measures approximately 7 3/8" x 11 1/4. 1 Page. Document has heavy tearing. Top part of the letter is nearly torn loose at the fold. 8. 2 Letter Fragments which appear to be part of the same letter. It is signed by "John Holland." I don't see a date. Heavy tearing, folds and missing parts of the papers. 9. Letter Fragment signed by "John Holland." Heavy tearing, folds and missing part of the paper. This letter does not open and I don't want to risk further tearing by trying to open it. I don't see a date. 10. Letter Fragment signed by "John Holland." Heavy tearing, folds and missing part of the paper. 11. Letter Fragment addressed to "Mr. Darby." No signature. Measures approximately 2 1/2" x 6 3/4". Heavy tearing, folds and missing nearly all of the paper. 12. Letter Fragment with no identifiable names. Measures 7 1/2" x 11 3/4". Heavy tearing, folds and missing part of the paper. 13. Unknown Document mentions "John Holland" and "Jonathan Darby" and appears to discuss land/property. It is four pages torn into two segments. Multiple years mentioned including 1666 and 1742. Segments measure around 7" x 9" (give or take). Heavy tearing, folds, chipping and missing parts of the paper. 14. Letter signed by "John Holland" addressed to "Darby." Measures approximately 6 7/8" x 11 1/2". 1 Page. Heavy tearing, folds, chipping and missing parts of the paper. 15. 16 Letter Fragments. Some torn pieces are as small as 2" x 3 3/8. Darby's name is mentioned throughout the pages. These items may be connected to other papers within this batch or some other document in this collection, I'm not sure. Largest measures around 6 1/4" 11 1/2". Heavy tearing, folds, chipping and missing sections. 16. Envelope with writing on the front side, which reads: "Pedigree showing connection between Darbys, Bennetts, Lovetts and Poes." Measures 3 5/8" x 4 3/4". 17. Family Genealogy Chart mentioning the Lovetts, Bennetts...etc. Measure approximately 7" x 8 3/4". 1 Page. 18. Unknown Handwritten Letter/Document measuring approximately 4 1/2" x 7 1/4". 4 Pages. Undated. Heavy tearing, folds, chipping and missing sections. 19. Letter addressed to "My Good Fellow" dated 1783. Above that it reads, "Copy to Mr. Charles Vaughan." Measures approximately 6 1/2" x 8 1/4". 5 Pages. I don't know who wrote this letter. Heavy tearing, folds, chipping and missing sections. 20. Document Fragment which mentions the "Earl of Roscommon." I also see the year "1686," although I don't know if it was written that year or if was just mentioned as a historical reference. There are two parts to this document, one measures just 2 1/4" x 7 1/2" and the larger segment measures around 6" x 7 1/2". Heavy tearing, folds, chipping and missing sections. 21. Letter addressed to "Mr. Darby" and signed by "John Holland." Measures approximately 5 3/4" x 7 1/2". I don't see a date. Heavy tearing, folds, chipping and missing sections. 22. Letter addressed to "Jonathan Darby," and it appears this was also written by "John Holland," although the signature is torn. The date is also torn away. Measures approximately 6 1/2" x 12 1/2". Heavy tearing, folds, chipping and missing sections. 23. Letter Fragment signed by "John Holland." The year written is "1662." The top portion of the letter is missing so I don't know who it was addressed to. Measures approximately 7" x 8". Heavy tearing, folds, chipping and missing sections. 24. Letter Fragment signed by "John Holland." Measures approximately 5 3/4" x 7 3/4". 4 Pages with writing. There is a hole with what appears to be dark burn marks around it, and for that reason, the pages don't separate. I don't want to risk further tearing, so I won't pull it apart. Heavy tearing and creasing, chipping, a large hole, and missing sections. 25. Document dated "1717," measuring approximately 5 3/4" x 7 3/4". 1 Page. Heavy tearing, folds, chipping and missing sections. 26. Letter addressed to "Dear Darby" dated 1776. Measures approximately 7 1/4" x 8 3/4". 4 Pages with writing. Letter begins, "I have written with impatience to congratulate you on your promotion." On the outside of the letter it reads, "Lieutenant Henry D' Esterre Darby." I can't read the signature of the person who wrote this letter. Heavy tearing, folds and chipping. 27. Letter addressed to "Dear Darby" dated on the back side, "1799." Measures approximately 7 1/2" x 9 1/2". 1 Page (front/back). It appears to be signed by "St. Vincent," John Jervis. In the first paragraph, "Lady Hamilton" was mentioned. Heavy tearing, folds and chpping. 28. Letter possibly dated "1826." I'm not sure who this is addressed to. On the back side, it reads "Mrs. William Henry Darby." Measures approximately 7 5/8" x 10". 4 Pages. Heavy tearing, folds and chipping. 29. Letter addressed to "My Dear Little Girl." Measures approximately 4 1/2" x 7 1/8". 8 Pages. I don't see a date and the signature on the back side appears to read, "Darby." I don't know which Darby this is. 30. Letter addressed to "Jonathan," which is dated 1768 on the back side. Measures approximately 7 3/8" x 8 1/4". 1 Page (front/back). Appears to be signed, "Jonathan Lovett." 31. Letter addressed to "Mary." "Leap" is written on the first page on the date line, although I don't see a year. Measures approximately 7 1/4" x 9". 3 Pages. I don't know who wrote this letter. 32. Letter dated "1835." I can't decipher the recipient's name. Measures approximately 7 1/4" x 9". 3 Pages. Author of the letter may be "W.H. Darby," but the section of the page with the last name is torn away. 33. Document dated 1822 discussing Laura Charlotte Curteis and her Baptism. Measures approximately 7" x 9". 1 Page. Document mentions Hothfield, Kent and is signed by the Rector of Hothfield. 34. Family History Document with information about "George Darby - Vice Admiral." Measures 7" x 9". 2 Pages. Heavy tearing, folds and chipping. 35. Letter addressed to "My Dear Daughter" possibly dated 1834 (not sure). Written from "Windmill Hill." Measures approximately 7 7/8" x 9 7/8". 4 Pages. This may have been written by Edward Jeremiah Curteis to his daughter Laura. 36. Letter addressed to "My Dearest Mamma," and signed, "J. Darby." On the outside, the year "1828" is written. Measures approximately 7 1/8" x 8 7/8". 3 Pages. 37. Letter addressed to "My Dear Mother." I don't see the writers name or a year. Measures approximately 7 1/4" x 9". 4 Pages. 38. Document dated "1719" measuring approximately 6 1/4" x 8". 1 Page. This may be signed by "R. Finn," but I could be wrong. Finn may have been a lawyer. I can't make out the name. Document mentions Jonathan Darby. 39. Document measuring approximately 7 1/4" x 8 1/4". 1 Page. This may be signed by "R. Finn." 40. Document dated "1718" measuring approximately 6" x 8". 1 Page. Heavy tearing, folds and chipping. 41. Document Fragment dated "1721" measuring approximately 4 5/8" x 7 7/8". 1 Page. This may be signed by "R. Finn." Document dated "1720" and possibly signed by "R. Finn." Signature is mostly torn away. Measures approximately 3 3/4" x 6 3/8". Heavy tearing, folds and chipping. 48. Note mentioning "Compliments to Miss Charlotte Curteis," including a name card with her name on it. Note measures approximately 4 3/8" x 7". 1 Page with writing. Card measures about 1 7/8" x 2 7/8". "Miss Charlotte" is written on the back side. 49. Small paper with "Laura C. Curteis" and "1816" written on the outside. Inside the folds of the paper is some of her hair that was trimmed off and saved. 50. 3 Newspaper Clippings. Titles of the articles read, "Rejoicings at Leap Castle," "Rejoicings at Leap Castle - Marriage of Miss Darby," and "Death of William Henry Darby, Esq." 51. Letter to Charlotte Curteis. Measures approximately 7 1/4" x 9". 4 Pages with writing. 52. Letter to "My Very Dear Daughter" and signed "M. Curties." Measures approximately 7" x 9". 3 Pages with writing. 53. Letter to "My Dear Mary" and appears to be signed, "Grandmother Anne Darby," although I could be wrong. Measures approximately 3 5/8" x 4 7/8". 3 Pages with writing. 54. Letter appears to read: "I am Jonathan Darby, I'm at Leap." Measures approximately 4" x 6 1/8". 2 Pages with writing. 55. 4 Newspaper Clippings in an envelope which reads, "Old Newspaper Cuttings." Envelope measures 3 3/4" x 4 3/4". 56. Letter addressed to "My own sister" measuring approximately 5 1/8" x 8". 4 Pages. Not sure who wrote this letter. Includes original envelope with "Leap Castle" written on the front. 57. Last Will and Testament of Laura Charlotte Darby dated "1843." There is also a letter written on the back side. Measures approximately 7 3/8" x 9 1/4". 4 Pages with writing. Heavy tearing, folds and chipping. In Original Envelope. Envelope reads, "Copy of Will of Laura Charlotte Darby, 1843." 58. Family Genealogical Chart for the Darby Family in two paper sections. This likely used to be attached to the same page. These measure 6" x 8" (give or take). Heavy tearing, folds and chipping. 59. Grouping of notebook pages, measuring approximately 4 1/2" x 7 1/4". 12 Pages. Only one page has writing on it. Pages appear to have burn areas, h eavy tearing, folds and chipping. Pages are loose. 60. Grouping of notebook pages, measuring approximately 4 7/8" x 7 1/2". 26 Pages. Writing on various pages. There are burn areas, heavy tearing, chipping and missing sections. Indenture Document dated 1819 involving Henry D'Esterre Darby of Leap Castle. Measures approximately 15 1/4" x 19" (unfolded). Measures 3 1/4" x 5 3/8" (folded). 63. A Circular Design Pattern inside a folded piece of paper, which reads: "Ensign to the Spanish Ships, Manned and Officered by the French." Circular item measures around 1 7/8" x 2" and the note measures 2" x 4 1/2". 64. Handwritten Note Papers beginning with, "The Castle in Modern Times called Leap Castle...was one of the chief strongholds in Ely O'Carroll - the old name of this interesting place is Leim Ui Bhanain..." These pages measure approximately 4 1/2" x 6". 15 Pages. 65. 16 Handwritten Note Pages measuring 4 3/8" x 7 3/8". Pages have burn marks, heavy tearing, folds and missing sections. Information noted in this listing, including names and years, may be incorrect. I did my best to read and decipher the handwriting, which can be difficult to read. This collection is in antique condition with heavy wear throughout. There is heavy tearing, chipping, missing parts of pages, folds, creasing, wrinkling, curling, holes, a heavy old paper scent, staining, age discoloration and marks. Some papers have bunched up areas, and it makes it difficult to separate the pages from each other. Some pages are torn in half. Pages chip very easily. I mentioned possible fire damage to some papers. There are darkened spots which chip easily at the touch. Leap Castle experienced a heavy fire in 1922. It is not known if these documents survived that fire. See photos for more information. These historical papers were not stored in a way to preserve condition. It is clear that a major effort will be needed to protect and safeguard these documents going into the future. The papers are in fragile condition. Unboxed, this collection weighs under 2 Pounds. These papers were found at a flea market in South Florida. I don't know the backstory of these documents or how they arrived in Florida.
