Neck Correction Surgery (platysmaplasty) – As patients age, typically, they experience changes in the contour of the neck. Often, this is characterized by loss of definition of the jaw line, effacement of the cervicomental angle, laxity of the skin of the neck, wrinkles and formation of readily visible vertical bands of the neck (platysma bands). Certain patients also experience an accumulation of subcutaneous fat of the neck (submental) area. Fortunately, there are excellent surgical techniques available to alleviate these symptoms and restore the youthful appearance of the neck. The exact treatment recommended will vary from patient to patient depending upon their skin type, age and the deficiencies which require attention. Usually, a combination of liposuction of the neck (submental) area combined with tightening of the platysma muscle is recommended.

This operation can be performed through a very short (one inch) incision just beneath the chin. The scar usually heals extremely well and is essentially “invisible” after just a few weeks or months. Through this tiny incision, Dr. Handel can eliminate the fatty deposits of the neck area and carefully correct the vertical bands in the neck by tightening the platysma muscle. The neck correction (platysmaplasty) can either be performed as an independent procedure or may be part of a large operation such as a mid and lower face-lift.
