CASE #1

This 47 year old woman noted fine wrinkling of the lower eyelid area as well as a deepening of the nasolabial folds. She underwent autologous fat grafting to the lower eyelids and the nasolabial creases and her result is shown six months after the fat grafts.

CASE #2

This 51 year old Asian female complained of deepening of the nasolabial folds. She underwent autologous fat grafting to the nasolabial creases and is shown six months after the procedure.

CASE #3

This attractive 27 year old woman complained of deep nasolabial creases. She underwent autologous fat grafting to the nasolabial folds and her result is shown two years after the fat grafts.

Fat Transfer Surgery (fat grafting) – During the past decade, autologous fat grafting or fat transfer surgery has grown greatly in popularity. New techniques and new instrumentation have been developed to enhance the success of fat grafting procedures. Fat grafting (also known as “fat injection”) is a surgical procedure which involves transferring fat cells from areas that have excessive fat (such as the abdomen, hips or thighs) and injecting the fat into areas that lack volume.

Areas that are commonly grafted include creases or wrinkles of the face, the atrophic tissues of the back of the hand, the breasts and the buttocks (the so-called “Brazilian butt lift”). Fat grafting is safe, the results are long-lasting, the procedure is well tolerated and results in a very natural looking appearance. Fat grafting can play a role in filling in areas of the face that appear “creased” or sunken in. Fat grafting can also be used to enhance the lips, giving them a fuller, more youthful appearance.

In recent years, fat grafting has been applied to breast augmentation. For patients who elect to proceed with fat grafting to increase the size of their breasts, it is unnecessary to rely on a prosthetic breast implant, but rather, the patient’s own natural tissues are harvested and injected into the breasts to increase the volume and improve the contours. Likewise, in recent years, enhancement of the gluteal area has been achieved successfully with autologous fat transfer. This operation, often referred to as a “Brazilian butt lift,” consists of harvesting unwanted fatty tissue (typically from the abdomen, outer thighs, inner thighs and hip roll or muffin top area) and carefully injecting and threading this fat into the gluteal area. Fat grafting of the buttocks can give very dramatic and long-lasting results without relying on the implantation of “butt implants” or other foreign material that can lead to infections, deformity and the need for revisionary surgery. Fat grafting is a more “natural” method to achieve the desired contours.

Dr. Handel has extensive experience in fat grafting, both of the face and body. He has successfully performed fat grafting to correct depressions in the temporal area, to enhance the appearance of the lower eyelids, to soften the nasolabial folds, and to improve the appearance of the cheeks (malar area). Dr. Handel also has a great deal of experience using the techniques to fat grafting to improve the results post mastectomy breast reconstruction and also for elective cosmetic breast enlargement. In recent years, Dr. Handel has refined the technique of autologous fat grafting to the buttocks so that he can provide patients with reliable and safe augmentation of the buttocks using one’s own natural tissues.

Most fat grafting procedures are performed on an outpatient basis at the Plastic Surgery Center in Beverly Hills so that the patient is under general anesthesia and is completely comfortable. We have the most modern equipment (MicroAire fat harvesting system), both for harvesting fat and the most modern devices (Byron medical products) for an injection of autologous fat.
